Artists and Projects

Margarida Paiva (b. 1975, Portugal) is an artist based in Oslo working with film, photography, and installation. In 2007, Paiva completed her master’s degree at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts and previously studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Porto.

Her recent works are a personal exploration of the mystical dimensions of nature. They draw inspiration from folklore, fairy tales, and ancient myths. Each photograph is a visual narrative that speaks in symbols and uses the language of the subconscious, ritual, nature, transformation, and mystery.

In December, 2017, artist Margarida Paiva was invited to Residence Botkyrka through curator Abir Boukhari, AllArtNow who hosted a series of programmes in the apartment.

The exhibition For every silence there is a void featured a selection of video works by the artist that was situated inside of Residence Botkyrka’s apartment, as well as projected onto the kitchen window to be seen from the outside.

The video works shows fictional stories or situations connected to isolation, loss, memory and displacement. The short films often depict a character in a brief passage, either physical or mental, drawing on the struggle to overcome oneself. Others are narratives based on real events that are deconstructed and reassembled into poetic fragmented narratives.

The residency received funding from the Nordic-Baltic Mobility Programme for Culture and was in collaboration with AllArtNow. Residence Botkyrka is supported by Botkyrkabyggen.
