Sany (b. 1986 in Prague) is the longest-active female graffiti artist in the Czech Republic. Inspired by the traditional “New York School” graffiti lettering style, she began writing her name “Sany”, in 2002. She is now a well-known figure in the global street art scene and a member of two international all-female graffiti crews, “PUFF” and “PMS.”
Artist and filmmaker Sany was invited to Residence Botkyrka’s program by the art critic and writer Macarena Dusant in collaboration with Åsa Falewicz and the Czech Center in Stockholm.
The film Girl Power was screened in Botkyrka konsthall, followed by a conversation with Sany, Macarena Dusant and artist Nachla Libre.
Sany also invited local youths to a graffiti workshop at the Multicultural Center’s open wall in Fittja.
Girl Power
Sany & Jan Zajíček
Czech Republic, 2016
In the documentary film Girl Power, we follow graffiti artist Sany and her encounters with female writers around the world. It is a personal story that highlights the conflicts of everyday life; the expectations of society and the urge to follow one’s dream.
Sany started filming in 2009 with the aim to make female graffiti artists visible, and to talk about their struggles and stories. It took Sany seven years to complete the film and Girl Power is as much a story about graffiti as about passion and a person who refuses to give up her dream.
Following the screening, there was a talk between Sany and Nachla Libre, poet, artist & artistic director of Revolution Poetry, who both face preconceived ideas about who could be an artist.
The talk centered around the essence of the film: sisterhood and solidarity against a male dominated society norm, as well as challenges in juggling everyday life with the love of your art.
The programme is initiated by Macarena Dusant & Åsa Falewicz, and is produced by Macarena Dusant in collaboration with Botkyrka konsthall, Residence Botkyrka and the Czech Centre in Stockholm.
The filmscreening and residency was in collaboration with Czech center in Stockholm. Botkyrka Residence is supported by Botkyrkabyggen.
