Towards an Institution was a project that explored how a new kind of institution in Fittja could be formed. The project posed the question: What if our understanding of the late modernist built environment were viewed without the judgmental lenses of our time, lenses shaped by concepts such as demolition and transformation? Might architecture and its sites then be reinterpreted? What would happen if, instead of constantly asking what we can change in these areas, we allowed the places themselves to change us?
In the process of building a new institution in Fittja, is it possible to listen more closely to the site and to what already exists there, rather than focusing on additions? Can local initiatives and organizations become an integral part of a shared institution that, over time, gradually emerges together and in close relation to everything that already exists in Fittja?
By presenting a model, the project initiated conversations and discussions about architecture and art institutions as drivers of change.
